UNBOXHOME / THE BASICS
At home in your setup.
A short introduction to connecting your services.
Start with the services you run.
UnboxHome is a client for your existing dashboards and self-hosted services. It does not provide server hosting. Your device needs a route to those services, on your home network or through your own secure remote access.
Connect your first device.
- Install the Windows or Android release from the download page.
- Open UnboxHome on a network that can reach your server. Enter your Homepage address, including
https://or the appropriate localhttp://address. You can also use the local network discovery option. - Continue and create a master password of at least 12 characters. Keep it somewhere safe: UnboxTrip cannot recover a forgotten password.
- Open your dashboard and select a service. Service tabs keep navigation together.
If you already use UnboxHome on another device, choose “Import from another device” and follow the local QR transfer prompts. Keep both devices on a network where they can reach each other, and approve the transfer on the source device.
The screenshots on this website show the Windows 0.17.7 interface with a fictional demonstration dashboard.
Keep your credentials local.
An encrypted vault on the device holds the credentials you choose to save. The UnboxTrip website does not receive vault contents. Review the service address before saving an account. Autofill does not submit the login form: you stay in control of signing in.
Keep your master password available even if you enable device unlock. A local previous-file recovery copy is not an off-device backup. Before replacing a device or removing the app, complete a transfer and confirm that the receiving device can open the vault and dashboard.
Choose how to unlock the vault.
In Settings, turn off automatic unlock and save before enabling device authentication. Save again, lock the vault and test the next unlock.
- Windows: Windows Hello must be available and configured in Windows sign-in options. The system decides which supported methods it can offer. If Hello is unavailable, use the master password.
- Android: supported strong biometrics can authorize access. On Android 11 or later, the system screen lock can also offer a PIN, pattern or password. A tablet’s face unlock may not meet the strong-biometric requirement.
Automatic unlock is a separate convenience option: anyone with access to the device session may be able to open the vault. Device authentication and automatic unlock cannot be enabled together on Windows or Android.
If a service cannot be reached.
Check that its server is running and that the address works on the same device. At home, use the correct local network. Away from home, connect your own secure remote access, such as Tailscale, and check the configured remote address. An unavailable service does not mean the vault has been lost. Use Retry or correct the address from the error screen.
The companion is optional.
Browsing does not require the Homepage companion. The companion is for supported configuration features, with previews and confirmation before changes.
Check for updates.
Open Settings and select the update icon to search for a newer public release. When an update is available, the app offers a link to the download page. Download the installer for your device and install it over the existing app, without uninstalling or clearing its data. Installation is always your action.
Windows releases currently have no publisher certificate; Android APKs use the dedicated UnboxHome signing key. Read the platform instructions on the download page. An old Android build that incorrectly reports itself as unsupported needs a first manual update from that page.
For help, contact contact@unboxtrip.com with your app version, platform and the displayed error. Never send your master password, vault file or account credentials.
